Cti Environmental has teams dedicated to monitoring almost any aspect of environmental or health and safety related issues within the cast metals and other sectors. These include: emissions monitoring, servicing of continuous monitoring systems (CEMS); COSHH Surveys; noise; hand arm vibration; environmental noise; groundwater monitoring; local exhaust ventilation; surveys (LEV); odour monitoring; fugitive dust surveys; dust appointment studies and dust management plans.
Interventions by the Cti Environmental have led to several success stories being recorded, one of which is given in summary below.
Bristol-based pump manufacturer, Apex Engineering Ltd, applied to the local council for planning permission and an Environmental Permit for a Replicast® production facility designed and built by Cti. The site was surrounded by a housing estate, which was also subject to new housing developments on the land opposite. Being that the proposed facility was so close to housing, its potential impact on the local environment had to be carefully assessed.
The Replicast® process, developed by Cti, has advantages over traditional cast metal processes as it removes the requirement for odorous chemically bonded sand to be used. It also reduces raw material consumption and waste.
Cti designed and built abatement systems for metal melting and ceramic curing furnaces to completely remove deleterious materials from the output, thus ensuring that the quality of the local environment was preserved. In addition, Cti environmental provided advice on the application to the Local Authority for the Environmental Permit which is necessary for such
operations to be carried out.
It was also necessary for Apex Engineering to demonstrate that any proposed development would not add excessive noise to the area. Cti environmental carried out noise measurements, using a Brüel & Kjær Integrating Sound Level Meter, at several points in the local area, and modelled the potential additional noise. Apex Engineering Ltd was then able to provide robust evidence to demonstrate that the new foundry – Precision Alloys Ltd – would not add to the noise in the area above the specified limits. As a result, planning permission was secured and the foundry was built which subsequently added growth to the local economy and jobs to the area. Furthermore, this extra capacity has allowed work, which was previously sourced outside the UK, to be brought back to the country.
