Combating Metallic Corrosion

Location:

NAMTEC, Swinden House

Start:

17/09/08

Finish:

Cost:

£500 + VAT for this two day course

Description:

A two day course aimed at practicing engineers and designers interested in the prevention of corrosion by selection of appropriate materials and coatings. The basic theory of corrosion is presented in an easy to understand manner. Marine, building, automotive, and chemical sectors are used to illustrate the application of corrosion resisting materials. Coatings, anodic and cathodic protection are examined in detail. Interesting case studies are presented to demonstrate typical problems and solutions.
Corrosion in industrialised nations costs vast amounts of money every year. Typically 3.5 to 5.0% of the GNP. Existing corrosion prevention technology, correctly implemented can reduce these costs by up to two thirds.

Who should attend
The course is aimed at engineers of all disciplines including trainees, consultants, architects and educators. The course will be of particular value to those who are suppliers of metals and alloys, and to manufacturers of corrosion resisting materials such as paint and zinc. It will also be of value to those involved in service industries (electric, gas and sewerage) and construction, mining, marine and especially galvanisers. After attending this course delegates should be able to cost effectively prevent corrosion at the design stage by application of the knowledge gained.

Speaker
Course Manager: Professor Denis Twigg CEng FIMMM
Denis is an international consultant in metal failure analysis and corrosion technology. He is a Professor of the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University of Port Elizabeth, South Africa and an Honorary Life Member of the Galvanizers Association of Southern Africa. Denis's forty years of experience includes thirty one years in South Africa in various senior capacities, including Head of Department of Materials and Metallurgy at the University, Head of Department of Metallurgy at the South African Bureau of Standards and Executive Director of the Galvanizers Association of Southern Africa. In his former years in the UK he was a senior Metallurgist with the British Iron and Steel Research Association and a lecturer in Metallurgy and Corrosion Technology at the Bradford Technical College. His expertise in more recent years is often called upon regarding litigation matters as an expert witness.
