SMART materials are those that sense changes in their surroundings and then react in a positive, controlled and predicated manner; for example self-cleaning glass which does not allow surface contamination or metal spectacle frames which revert back to their original shape after being bent. These types of materials have seen limited exploitation in the UK, and so this project has been established as part of the DTI's plans to strengthen the UK capability in this area of materials science.
The National Metals Technology Centre (NAMTEC), along with the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3), are developing virtual networks and technical workshops to promote the exploitation of SMART materials with the aim of stimulating economic growth in support of UK businesses.
The aims of the scheme are to help develop new products, generate sales of new technology, stimulate wealth creation and economic growth and inform the UK industry about the availability of “smart” technology.
Membership of the SMART.mat network is free and benefits include access to research and development grants, technology updates via quarterly e-newsletters and the website, and invitations to conferences, seminars and workshops.
If you would like to join the SMART.mat network or be contacted by one of our Technology Translators, please register for access to the site using the registration facility on the Materials KTN HOME PAGE.
Please make sure that you include your areas of interest or expertise in Smart materials/structures so that we can tailor the response to your needs.
