Innovative Metals Processing Centre (IMPC)

The Innovative Metals Processing Centre (IMPC) is a venture between the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre with Boeing (AMRC) and IMMPETUS (the Institute for Microstructural and Mechanical Process Engineering: The University of Sheffield) supported by the ERDF and Yorkshire Forward.  This Capacity Building Centre is concentrating on the processing of titanium and other high value alloys using advanced powder metallurgy as well as process development for the powders sector both regionally and further a field.

In common with the other CBCs, IMPC is very industrially focussed aiming to help companies within the region to bid for and win contracts with major international companies - helping to forge a secure future for the sector in the region.

The IMPC builds on the recognised excellence of the AMRC in delivering innovative manufacturing technology solutions to the engineering sector and IMMPETUS' expertise in metals processing and is focused on advanced net-shape processing - with a particular emphasis on metal injection moulding (MIM) and powder based additive and rapid manufacturing technologies.

The centre boasts a range of the latest equipment including metal injection moulding equipment, a vacuum furnace, powder handling and mixing facilities and two powder bed metal processing systems.  This facility is available for use by companies interested in any aspect of these developments. The centre employs academics from the University of Sheffield, technicians and PhD and MSc level students.

Additionally, companies involved in IMPC are encouraged to place staff in the Centre to collaborate with academic and technical staff on projects and help an easy two-way transfer of technology to and from industry.
